Swedish Massage
Swedish Massage is more commonly known as relaxation massage to the whole body. It uses a variety of techniques that are specifically designed to manipulate & relax superficial and deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue to achieve an optimum effect.
The techniques used in Swedish Massage are:
- Effleurage- long gliding strokes with palms & fingers
- Petrissage- kneading movements with hands
- Friction- circular pressure movements with hands
- Percussion- hacking & tapping movements done briskly
- Vibration- oscillatory movements that vibrate the muscle
- Passive & Active Movements- bend & stretch the muscles/body
Swedish massage main purpose is to increase oxygen flow throughout the blood & remove toxins from the muscles by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid & other metabolic wastes.
It is also beneficial to:
- Reduce recovery time from muscular strain
- Stretches ligaments and tendons to help maintain their flexibility
- Stimulate skin, muscles, glands, & circulation
- Stimulates nervous system and soothes nerves
- Reduces both emotional & physical stress
- Promotes relaxation and well being
Swedish Massage involves the application of direct pressure to the muscles by manipulation of the tissues using the six techniques specified previously. These motions applied with the hands, fingers, forearms & elbow to the area of tension may help target the below tissues:
- Muscles
- Tendons
- Ligaments
- Skin
- Joints
- Other connective tissue
- Lymphatic vessels
- Organs of the gastrointestinal system
The two most common reasons for introducing Swedish massage as a therapy into your life has been for client demand and perceived clinical effectiveness.
